The digestive system is made up of all the organs that contribute to the digestion of food, which gives your body the energy and nutrition it needs to survive. Most of the food you eat is too big to be used by your cells and needs to be broken down into smaller parts. Digestion is the process that breaks food down into its nutrient parts: simple sugars, amino acids, and fatty acids. These vital nutrient parts are then taken up by the cell layer that lines the inner surface of the digestive tract, enter the blood stream, and used as fuel and building blocks for your cells.

Major organs

The major organs in the digestive system are the gall bladder, the esophagus, the stomach, the liver, the large intestine, the small intestine, and mouth. these parts are very important the mouth chews the food you eat. After the food gets chewed and swallowed it goes into the esophagus. The esophagus is a long tube that runs down from the mouth to the stomach. Then it goes into the stomach. The stomach is a large, sack like organ that churns the food and bathes it in a very strong acid (gastric acid). Food in the stomach that is partly digested and mixes in with stomach acids is called

The goal of digestion is to break down food into it's smallest chemical components, called molecules, proteins become amino acids and small peptides,and fats (or lipids) are broken down into fatty acids. Food is ground into small bits by the teeth in your mouth. Chewing increases the surface area of the food and reduces food particles into smaller parts, making them easier to swallow. The food is softened with saliva that is excreted from salivary glands in your mouth water and mucus to help you swallow. Saliva contains enzymes that start breaking down carbohydrates in your mouth. The lump of chewed, softened food is brought to the back of your tongue for the next step. Your throat muscles contract to force the chewed, softened food out of your mouth and into your pharynx. Swallowing is initially an active, voluntary action with an additional reflex response to clear the esophagus of food. From your pharynx, the food then travels down your esophagus and into your stomach. Smooth muscles surrounding your esophagus push the food to your stomach by a process called peristalsis. Your body performs peristalsis automatically without any conscious effort on your part.


Viral gastroenteritis
This illness of the digestive tract is the second most common contagious illness in the United States. It is an inflammation of the stomach and small intestine which results to diarrhea. Most people mistake viral gastroenteritis for the common flu. Cause: Viral gastroenteritis can be caused by one of four different viruses (rotavirus, adenovirus, norovirus or astrovirus) that are most commonly transmitted by unwashed hands or sharing food or drink with someone carrying the active virus. People may still be contagious 2weeks after their symptoms have disappeared. Viral gastroenteritis will usually go away on it's own as the body fights the infection. Symptoms usually lasts 1-2 days, but may persist for longer periods of time. People infected with this virus should drink lots of water to prevent dehydration. Eating easy to digest foods, like chicken broth or toast, and avoiding dairy products can help ease symptoms.

Your body needs a balanced diet of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, vitamin, and minerals in order to stay strong and healthy.

Make sure to include a good source of fiber in your diet, which can be found in whole grains and vegetables. Fiber makes the consistency of the feces easier to pass out of your system and helps you go to the bathroom on a regular schedule.
